SUMMARY:NETGAIN Seminar: Marine Net Gain: From theory to delivery with Jonathan Abbatt
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid seminar. Please either note your attendance in-person to the NETGAIN team\, or register to attend online. \n  \nAs governments and industries look for new ways to improve the natural environment\, there is growing interest in applying “Net Gain” policies\, which aim to leave nature in a better state after development takes place. While these approaches are becoming established on land\, applying them to the marine environment presents significant challenges. Offshore wind projects operate in complex ecosystems where environmental changes occur across large areas and are influenced by many different human activities. Questions also remain about governance of the marine environment\, how environmental benefits can be measured\, and how Net Gain would interact with existing marine planning and nature conservation regulations. \nThis seminar explores whether terrestrial Net Gain models are suitable for offshore environments and considers whether a broader\, strategic approach to managing cumulative pressures on the marine environment may deliver more effective and lasting ecological improvements. \n  \nAbout the NETGAIN Seminar Series \n\nThe NETGAIN seminar series is designed to support the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers by providing NETGAIN PhD students with perspectives from ecology\, economics\, social science\, law\, and environmental policy. The series introduces students to the diverse disciplinary lenses needed to understand and shape Net Gain frameworks and emerging nature markets. \n  \nWhile aimed primarily at NETGAIN doctoral researchers\, the seminars are equally valuable to practitioners\, policymakers\, and industry partners working at the interface of nature recovery\, land-use planning\, carbon and biodiversity markets\, and environmental governance. \n  \nThe seminar series also plays a complementary role in the development of the NETGAIN eBook—a living\, multidisciplinary repository that responds to rapid advances in nature-positive policy\, practice\, and research. The seminars contribute to this larger initiative by exposing students and attendees to foundational concepts\, real-world challenges\, and cutting-edge methods that are essential for developing socially equitable\, ecologically robust\, and economically sound Net Gain approaches.
