(he/him)

Hi, I’m Barney! My wide-ranging interests and enthusiasm are present in both my academic career and personal life: I have an MA in Zoology from the University of Cambridge, and a Master of Land Economy from the University of Aberdeen. In my Master’s dissertation, I studied the conflict between farmers and the Cairngorms National Park Authority using media analysis, and this intersection of nature and society led me into the NETGAIN programme. On a personal level, I’m a volunteer ranger, volunteer leader for my local community-owned woodland, and a keen birdwatcher, cook and musician!
Biodiversity Net Gain through Nature Restoration of Urban Green Spaces
University of Aberdeen with Professor Claire Wallace
PhD aim:
To gain a better understanding of the contributions of urban nature restoration to both biodiversity and societal benefits.
PhD objectives:
- Assess public perceptions of the (dis)benefits of urban nature recovery measures through qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey incorporating photo-elicitation. This approach looks at specific local initiatives, and includes both the general public and key staff involved.
- Collate and analyse biodiversity data in pre-existing study areas in Aberdeen and Glasgow to assess the impact and spatial distribution of nature restoration measures.
- Integrate ecological and social data into a statistical multilevel model to evaluate how biodiversity enhancement approaches, biodiversity levels, and socio-demographic factors influence societal benefits and disbenefits.
