(he/him)

Hi, I’m Ben and my research interests are in quantitative ecology and ecological modelling. I started my studies at the University of Glasgow where I gained an honours degree in Marine and Freshwater Biology, having also studied 2 years of mathematics alongside this. I then was able to merge these interests for my MSc thesis (also based at the University of Glasgow) where I constructed a novel mathematical framework to model and predict biomass changes in a n-species estuarine ecosystem contaminated with heavy metals. Outside of academia I have also worked as a bike mechanic, professional photographer, and a musician.
A strategic, systems-based approach to the management of land predators in Scotland
University of Glasgow with Prof Jason Matthiopoulos
PhD aim:
To investigate the least destructive way to rearrange land use in Scotland as to balance land-predator fitness and the socio-economic benefits of the land to stakeholders.
PhD objectives:
- Create a model of the land-use mosaic in Scotland which allows for the modelling of different land-uses on predator fitness and the potential conflict of predators on land-use economic benefits (e.g. farming and livestock)
- Use the model to find out what is the lowest amount of changes or least intrusive changes we could make to the land-use mosaic to minimise or negate conflict with land-predators as to both increase predator fitness and provide socio-economic benefits.
